A new client's prior year tax return having errors is an all-too-common occurrence. When an income tax return preparer cannot legally sign a tax return, then consider choosing a CPA. |
Record Retention Guide
Our Record Retention Guides are a compiled list of common tax and financial records that a business or an individual may need to keep and guidelines for how long the records should be retained.
Federal law requires you to retain copies of your tax returns and supporting documents for three years, however if the IRS believes you have significantly under-reported your income or they suspect fraud, they can go back six years in an audit. When disposing of records, do not simply throw them away in the trash. In today's world, you have to be proactive to guard against identity theft, so be sure to shred all legal, business, and financial paperwork prior to disposing of them. |
If you have unusual or extenuating circumstances in your life, please call our office or an attorney before disposing of any important legal, business, or financial paperwork.
